About Travel to Hat Yai

Hat Yai is the largest city in Southern Thailand, with a city centre population of over 190,000 permanent and a population of over 700,000 in the wider metropolitan area. As well as being a major city and a visitor destination in its own right, Hat Yai is the main transport hub in Southern Thailand.

Staying Overnight in Hat Yai

There are over 150 hotels to choose from in Hat Yai City, ranging in price from around 500 THB a night for a private room in hotels such as the Pacific Residence, to around 3,000 THB a night for top hotels in the city, such as Centara Hotel Hat Yai. Compared to Bangkok, or other popular Thai tourist destinations such as Phuket, the hotels in Hat Yai offer great value for money.

There is accommodation close to Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1, such as the CK Residence, and there are also a number of restaurants and markets nearby. The liveliest part of Hat Yai, however, is located in the area immediately to the east of Hat Yai Junction Railway Station. This is the area where most leisure visitors choose to stay because of the large number of shops and restaurants, particularly on or near the Saneha Nusorn Road. There are also a few Western style bars in this area.

Places to Visit in Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a relatively new city which rapidly grew from a very small settlement of railway workers into a large town following the opening of Hat Yai Junction Railway Station in 1924. The city has no major historical sites to visit as a consequence. The main points of interest for visitors to Hat Yai are the shopping opportunities, the food, and a small number of cultural attractions such as the 35 metre long reclining Buddha statue at Wat Hat Yai Nai. The massive Kim Yong Market, only 600 metres from Hat Yai Junction Railway Station, is another major point of interest for many visitors to the city.

Songkhla

The seaside town of Songkhla, located 30 km by road from Hat Yai City, and the adjacent Songkhla Lake are popular tourist attractions and easy to visit on a day trip from Hat Yai. Frequent minivan services to Songkhla depart from Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1.

Songkhla has an attractive Old Town area, some interesting buildings, and a beach. Nearby Ko Yo in Songkhla Lake is also a popular visitor destination, with spectacular views across a lake and an unusual temple in a scenic location, Wat Laem Pho.

Koh Lipe

Hat Yai City is the transit point for travel to Koh Lipe. Joint minivan and speedboat services to Koh Lipe depart frequently throughout the day from both Hat Yai Junction Railway Station and Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1.
