About Travel to Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands is a unique holiday resort destination. One part of its uniqueness is its location at around 1,800 metres above sea level which means the weather is significantly cooler than it is in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Genting Highlands is also extraordinary in terms of the large cluster of leisure and retail outlets, along with hotels and even casinos.

History of Genting Highlands

A privately controlled project to transform large parts of Mount Ulu Kali into a holiday centre began in 1965, with enthusiastic support from local and national authorities in Malaysia. It took 4 years to complete the first part of an access road, and then another 2 years to open the first hotel.

This development is known as Resorts World Genting and it is the focal point for a cluster of related private businesses and attractions on the same mountain. Resorts World Genting is constantly evolving and growing, and the number of connecting businesses also continues to expand.

Theme Parks

Resorts World Genting has three theme parks, which have been renamed quite a few times over the last decade:

  • Genting Skyworlds (outdoor)
  • Skytropolis Funland (indoor)
  • Genting Grand Indoor Theme Park (indoor)

Each of these parks has several sections There is a lot for young children to do at Resorts World Genting, and lots of expenses for their parents to pay in terms of admission fees not just for the theme parks, but also additional costs payable for other types of attractions, such as the cable cars.

Hotels

There are a total of 7 hotels at Resorts World Genting. The most luxurious of these hotels is the 5 star Crockfords with only 138 rooms. This is far fewer than the 3 star First World Hotel, which has 7,351 rooms.

The combined total number of rooms for these 7 hotels is 10,461. This is a large resort accommodating in the region of 20,000 overnight guests during the busiest times of the year.

  • Genting Casino
  • SkyCasino
Cable Cars

Resorts World Genting has privately funded the construction of two cable car system, facilitating access to the resort, nearby attractions, and providing another leisure activity for visitors:

  • Genting Skyway (3,380 metres long)
  • Awana Shyway (2,400 metres long)

Additional fees are payable for taking a ride in either cable car system.

Other Attractions

Resorts World Genting may sound like a South East Asian version of Las Vegas, and that’s what the operator is basically aiming to achieve, however, Genting Highlands is also an area of exceptional beauty and there’s some other attractions nearby which independently operated:

  • Chin Swee Caves Temple
  • Awana Horse Ranch
  • Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm
  • Happy Bee Farm
