About Travel to Khao Sok National Park

There are two entrances to Khao Sok National Park, a western entrance and an eastern entrance. Services from Penang in Malaysia take passengers to the western entrance to Khao Sok National Park which is located close to Khao Sok Village. The eastern entrance to the park is located at Ratchaprapha Pier on Cheow Lan Lake.

Accommodation at the Western Entrance

There is accommodation inside Khao Sok National Park close to the western entrance. However, the accommodation is very basic as is the range of food available. For this reason may visitors choose to stay overnight in Khao Sok Village and explore the park on day trips.

There are over 30 tourist hotels and resorts within 1 km of the western entrance to choose from. They range in price from around 400 THB a night for a bed in a shared room in a hostel such as Coco Khao Sok Hostel, to over 4,000 THB a night in resorts such as Malulee Khao Sok Resort. Mid-range options include Khao Sok Paradise Resort, which typically charges around 2,000 THB a night for a bungalow with air-conditioning and satellite TV.

Activities at the Western Entrance

The western entrance, which is land based, is the best of the two to use if you are interested in jungle trekking and seeing the flora and fauna in the park. The Khao Sok National Park headquarters is located at the western entrance and this is the place to arrange guides for longer treks into the park and to find some of the park’s more elusive plants and animals. There is also a canopy walkway and zip lines close to the western entrance, as well as 9 signposted and easy to follow trails taking visitors to notable locations, such as waterfalls and viewpoints.

Eastern Entrance to Khao Sok National Park

The eastern entrance to Khao Sok National Park, at Ratchaprapha Pier, is 65 km by road from the western entrance to the park. Enquire locally for shared minivan services between the two destinations, because it’s too far to trek and there are no connecting boat services available.

To access the park from the eastern entrance you need to take a local wooden boat service. For a basic 2 to 3 hour tour around part of Cheow Lan Lake, which has a surface area of 165 square kilometres, expect to pay around 2,000 THB for a 6 seat boat. Visitors travelling alone or in small groups often join with other travellers to share the cost.

Accommodation at the Eastern Entrance

There are 14 floating bungalow resorts in Cheow Lan Lake, which vary a lot in price and facilities. You need to take a boat from Ratchaprapha Pier to reach the floating bungalows in Cheow Lan Lake. Once you have booked your stay, the resort, or the tour operator, will usually arrange the boat.

The floating bungalow resorts in Cheow Lan Lake are relatively expensive, particularly the more luxurious resorts. The actual room rates are often obscured because most guests buy a package including transport and food. As a guide expect to pay at least 1,200 THB per person a night for the bungalow at even the most basic of the resort. Large floating ‘villas’ able to accommodate a family typically cost 30,000 THB or more per night.
