About Travel to Khao Lak

Khao Lak is the name commonly used to refer to a roughly 20 km long stretch of coastline which features a nearly continuous stretch of white sand beach popular with holidaymakers. The southern end of Khao Lak begins at Phangnga Naval Base, which is located 71 km by road to the north of Phuket International Airport.

Towns in Khao Lak

Khao Lak has three coastal towns all connected by the Phet Kasem Road: Bang La On, Bang Niang, and Khuk Khak.

The largest and most popular of the three towns is Bang La On, which is also the most southerly of the three towns. However, the difference in size and range of facilities in each of Khao Lak’s three population centres is very small, and it’s simply a matter of personal preference as to which one is the best holiday destination. Most visitors decide where to stay on the basis of the hotels which are available, rather which town is better. Large beachfront hotels in the area, such as the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, are tourist attractions in their own right.

Beaches in Khao Lak

Khao Lak has lots of beaches. Many guides (but not all) refer to Khao Lak as having 8 beaches. From south to north these are:

  • Khao Lak South Beach
  • Sunset Beach
  • Nang Thong Beach
  • Bang Niang Beach
  • Khuk Khak Beach
  • Pakarang Beach
  • Coconut Beach
  • Bang Sak Beach

The busiest beach is Bang Niang Beach, which runs between Bang La On and Bang Niang. This beach is the location of several major resorts including Devasom Khao Lak Beach Resort & Villas, Khaolak Orchid Beach Resort, and The Haven Khao Lak. Khao Lak South Beach (in the far south of Khao Lak), by way of contrast, has few beachfront facilities and attracts relatively few holiday makers.

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park

One of Khao Lak’s major tourist attractions is the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. which is located in the south of Khao Lak. The park covers 125 square kilometres of mountainous and heavily forested land, the highest point of which is Lak Mountain (Khao Lak) which rises to 1,077 metres above sea level.

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park features a series of walking trails. The shorter trails are well sign posted and no guide is required. The most popular of these shorter walks is the nature trail to Hat Lek Beach. Among the longer walks is the 12 km  trek from the visitor centre to Ton Chong Fa Waterfall.

Similan Islands

Tab Lamu Pier, which is located at the far southern end of Khao Lak, is the main access point for the Similan Islands. The Similan Islands are a cluster of nine islands located approximately 60 km off the coast. Two of the islands are open to visitors. The main attractions in the Similan Islands, however, are the 25 dive sites which are popular with both scuba divers and snorkelers.

By speedboat the journey from Khao Lak to the Similan Islands takes from 60 to 80 minutes. By ferry the same journey takes around 4 hours, and even longer if you travel on a local fishing boat.
