About Travel to Chumphon

Chumphon is located on the east coast of Thailand, about 700 km by road from George Town in Penang. Chumphon is around 190 km by road to the north of Surat Thani City, which is the main connection point for ferry services to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Chumphon is the connection point for travel to Koh Tao, and also westward by bus to Ranong and a border crossing to Myanmar.

Chumphon City

Chumphon is a small city with around 35,000 permanent residents. The area around the city is predominantly rural with little heavy industry. Along with fishing, farming is the main economic activity in the area and Chumphon City is the major trading centre in the province for the sale of agricultural produce and seafood. It’s somewhere which has been changed relatively little by mass tourism.

There’s little for tourists to see and do in Chumphon City itself. The most interesting part of the province for leisure travellers is its 222 km coastline, much of which is almost entirely undeveloped.

Two coastal destinations in Chumphon Province which do attract visitors are Hat Sai Ri and Hat Thung Wua Laen. Hat Sai Ri is the province’s most popular beach. It’s located about 25 km by road to the south east of Chumphon City, and has plenty of hotels and restaurants. Hat Thung Wua Laen is another popular beach, also with hotels and restaurants, located 16 km by road to the north east of Chumphon City.

Staying Overnight in Chumphon City

Even though Chumphon City is not a tourist destination in its own right, plenty of leisure travellers stay overnight in Chumphon City awaiting onward travel connections the following day. The city has a relatively well developed tourist infrastructure for this reason, and a small number of restaurants, hotels, and tour companies catering specifically to foreign visitors.

Major hotel booking websites list around 35 tourist hotels, hostels and guesthouses in Chumphon City itself and a further 25 in the surrounding area. Compared to the cost of accommodation in better known destinations in Thailand, Chumphon is good value for money. The cheapest places to stay in the city start from around 400 to 500 THB a night, including the centrally located Suriwong Chumphon Hotel. The city’s most expensive and luxurious hotel, the A-Te Chumphon Hotel, charges from around 1,800 THB a night.

Two small budget hotels in particular are popular with foreign leisure travellers, the Salsa Hostel and Chumphon Euro Boutique Hotel. English is spoken by the staff at both hotels and the rooms are good.

For ‘international cuisine’ and the company of other leisure travellers try the long running cafe at Fame Tours & Services on the Saladeng Road. For authentic Southern Thai cuisine at local prices, cooked in the local way, we recommend visiting the night market at the top end of the Krumluang Chumphon Road, which is close to Chumphon Railway Station.

Travel to Koh Tao

There are three ferry services you can take from Chumphon to Koh Tao:

  • Lomprayah High Speed Ferry
  • Boonsiri High Speed Ferries
  • Night Boat

None of these ferry services depart from the centre of Chumphon City. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry ferry service departs from a ferry pier 27 km from Chumphon City. Boonsiri High Speed Ferries services depart from a pier 17 km away, and the Night Boat departs from a river pier about 10 km from the city centre.

Most travellers choose to take one of the joint bus and ferry services operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry or Boonsiri High Speed Ferries. They depart from Chumphon Railway Station twice a day in the mornings and take about 3 hours to reach Koh Tao.

Travel to Ranong

Ranong is located 120 km by road to the south east of Chumphon City. Ranong is the departure point for ferry and speedboat services to Koh Phayam. Ranong is also a border crossing point between Thailand and the southern most tip of mainland Myanmar. It’s possible to travel by small wooden boat from Ranong to Khawthoung, which is a small town with a Myanmar immigration office.

By bus or minivan the journey from Chumphon City to Ranong takes around 2 hours 30 minutes. The main provider of bus and minivan services from Chumphon to Ranong is Fame Tour, and their services to Ranong depart from their office in the centre of the city.
