The historic quarter of George Town has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status and there are plenty of places to visit, as well as great hotels, bars, restaurants and food markets. Penang has a relaxed and cosmopolitan atmosphere and drinking alcohol in George Town is more social acceptable than in many other parts of Malaysia. The historic parts of George Town is fairly compact and you can easily walk between most of the major attractions such as Chew Jetty, the Cheah Kongsi clan house and Thean Hou Kong Temple. Also notable are the city’s many wall murals, the most famous of which were created by well known artist Ernest Zacharevic. For visitors who would prefer not to walk around the town then hiring a cycle powered trishaw to take you the main sights is a good option.
