About Travel to Melaka
Melaka, which is the local name for Malacca in Malaysia, is a very popular tourist destination attracting many Malaysian tourists on short breaks as well as tourists from Singapore and other Asian countries. Melaka is less popular with Western tourists than Penang Island and Kuala Lumpur. Melaka is a popular place to come on holiday because of its many historical and cultural attractions. Melaka has a long and unique history of being colonised from the time of its beginning as a city in around 1400 AD, established by the disposed Sultan of Singapore, through to 1957 when Malaysia gained its independence. During these five centuries of foreign occupation control of the city passed to the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and finally to the British, save for a brief period during World War II when the Japanese Imperial Army controlled Melaka. Buildings from the period of the Sultanate remain along side Portuguese, Dutch and British style buildings. In addition the city’s Chinese and Indian communities built their own religious buildings and homes in the historic centre of Melaka.

The other thing that makes Melaka popular with tourists is the wide range of hotels, bar, restaurant and shops in the city centre. Melaka is a fun place to be where you can eat and drink well, and stay in good quality affordable accommodation. The area around the river in the centre of city is particularly scenic and gets quite lively in the evening as place to enjoy food and drink whilst sat outside along the river at one of the many small independent bars and restaurants.
