About Travel to Kuantan

Kuantan is a large city of over 500,000 permanent residents located on the East Coast of peninsula Malaysia. Kuantan is a popular destination for Malaysian and Singaporean tourists, but largely unknown to Western tourists. The city of Kuantan itself is lively with plenty of good hotels and coastal resorts, and a very wide range of foods available in restaurants and from street stalls. The area around Berjaya Megamall on Jalan Tun Ismail is a particularly popular place to eat out in the evenings.

The main places worth visiting in Kuantan city itself are the massive Ahmad Shah State Mosque, the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum, Kuantan River Esplanade, Kuantan Art Street and Kuantan 188 Tower for the views.

The most popular attractions in the area, however, are all outside of Kuantan city centre. The most famous of these, and the thing that Kuantan is best known for, are the evening cruises along the Kuantan River to see large swarms of fireflies. The area is notable for its large mangrove forests which are teeming with life, and visible from cruises along the Kuantan River. Also of note in the area are several good beaches, and Panching Cave, which is close to the picturesque Sungai Pandan Waterfalls. Panching Cave contains a series of Buddha statues within several different caverns. Of the 4 local beaches, the best is Teluk Cempedak, 5 km from Kuantan city. Teluk Cempedak has several very good beach resorts and watersports, including paddle boarding and kayaking, are very popular on this beach.
