About Travel to Kuala Terengganu
Kuala Terengganu is the capital city of the state of Terengganu and the home of the state’s royal family. Terengganu has a long history with reference made to the state in Chinese literature dating back to the Sui Dynasty (581–618 AD). Much of the old city of Kuala Terengganu was destroyed in a fire in 1882 including its famous Green Palace which was replaced by the Maziah Palace, with remains the royal residence of the current Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Kuala Terangganu receives relatively few foreign tourists, most foreign travellers who do come here are only passing through on their way to Redang Island. To reach Redang Island, which is centre for scuba diving and a very pleasant tropical beach destination, you need to take a local bus from the main bus station in Kuala Terengganu to Merang Jetty, which is 40 km north along the coast. From Merang Jetty there are frequent ferry and speedboat services to Redang Island. In Kuala Terengganu itself you should visit the Terengganu State Museum, Pulau Duyong (an island in the river with a fishing port and some old buildings), the historic China Town area (recommended), Masjid Terapung (a white mosque on a lake) and the Pasar Besar market. If you have time its well worth spending a day or two exploring Kuala Terangganu even if your reason for going there is to get a bus to the ferry pier for Redang Island.
