Tanah Rata is the connection point between long distance bus services to the Cameron Highlands and other forms of transport for local travel. Tanah Rata has developed into a transport hub as the town occupies the largest flat area within a mountainous region. Tana Rata is located 1,440 metres above sea level and has a considerably cooler climate than Kuala Lumpur for this reason. The range of facilities in Tanah Rata has developed in proportion to the number of bus passengers passing through the town and Tana Rata has a wide range of hotels, guesthouses, shops and restaurants to cater to a variety of tastes and budgets.

From Tanah Rata you have plenty of places to explore and things to do. The most popular excursion from Tanah Rata is a visit to the Cameron Bharat Tea Estate. This tea plantation, which is open to the public, is located 4.2 km to the South East and to get there you need to walk, hire a bike or pay for a taxi which should charge around 40 MYR return for the journey. For the more adventurous travellers there are signposted walking routes radiating out from the town of Tanah Rata to the nearby mountain peaks and waterfalls. There are 10 signposted trails to choose from and you should do some research looking at a local guide book before you decide which trail to take, and to establish where that trail starts from as this can be the most difficult aspect to successfully navigating through the mountains.
