Kota Bharu is a sizeable city with over 300,000 permanent residents and the administratrive capital of Kelantan State. Kelatntan is also the least permissive of the states in mainland Malaysia and it has virtually nowhere you can go out for an alcoholic drink, except for the Golden City Restaurant on Jalan Padang Garong. The Jalan Padang Garong is the main street in Kota Bharu and most foreign visitors to the city stay on this street or near to it. The Stesen Gas Kota Bharu, which is the local bus station, is located at the top end of the Jalan Padang Garong. The other place where foreign visitors stay is further South in the city near the large KB Mall. Some of the city’s better hotels are located near the KB Mall.

Kota Bharu doesn’t have any major tourist attractions. Most foreign visitors who come to Kota Bharu do so for three main reasons: to travel onward to Thailand, to apply for a visa at Thai Consulate in Kota Bharu, or travel to the Pehentian Islands. The Thai Consulate is located 1.1 km walking distance to the East of the bottom end of Jalan Padang Garong.
