About Travel to Hat Yai


Hat Yai is the largest city in Southern Thailand and it’s also the first major city you pass through travelling northward from the Thailand-Malaysia border at Sadao. Hat Yai is a large city with many amenities for visitors, and it is also a transport hub for onward travel in Thailand.

Arrival in Hat Yai

Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1, until recently known simply as ‘Hat Yai Bus Station’, is located 2.9 km by road to the south east of Hat Yai Junction Railway Station, which is in the busiest part of Hat Yai City.

If you are planning on staying overnight in Hat Yai you could stay close to the bus station. There are several hotels very close by, a small supermarket and lots of street food stalls. The area close to Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1 is less expensive than the more popular part of Hat Yai close to the railway station. A motorbike taxi or a small blue taxi van from Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1 to the area near the railway station costs 60 to 80 THB.

Things to Do In Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a relatively new town which developed after the opening of Hat Yai Railway Station in 1924. The city doesn’t have any historical buildings or well known tourist attractions. What it does have is plenty of shops, shopping malls, markets, hotels, restaurants and bars. Many of the visitors to the city are from Singapore and Malaysia and they come to enjoy the shopping opportunities, the food and the nightlife.

Onward travel from Hat Yai

There are lots of options for onward travel from Hat Yai. Hat Yai has a large international airport, a major train station with services to Bangkok via Surat Thani, Chumphon and Hua Hin, as well as a wide range of short and long distance bus services.

In terms of holiday destinations in the far south of Thailand, the two most popular are Songkhla and Koh Lipe.

The coastal town of Songkhla is only 28 km to the north east of Hat Yai. Minivans to Songkhla depart from Hat Yai Bus Terminal 1 frequently through out the day and take only 45 minutes to reach Songkhla.
