About Travel to the Melaka River
The Melaka River runs south from the hills near Tampin in Negeri Sembilan State through the centre of Melaka town to the sea. The river was once an important route for transporting goods to the port of Melaka for export, but fell in disuse during the 20th Century. Following a 350 million MYR investment by the Malaysian Government the stretch of riverfront that passes through historic Melaka town is now a major tourist attraction. A riverfront walkway has been built stretching several kilometres along each side of the river punctuated by historic and picturesque bridges. The buildings along the riverside, many of which are very old, have been for the most part beautifully restored and many have been turned into cafes and restaurants. Another feature of the riverside area is the street art, sponsored and encouraged by the municipal authorities, which has been added to walls of buildings facing the river.

A popular activity in Melaka is to take a cruise along the river. Riverboat tours operate from 09:00 to 23:30 every day at cost of 5 MYR for children under 12 and 15 MYR for foreign visitors. The charge for Malay nationals and permanent residents is 10 MYR per adult.
