Restoran Hoi Kee in Melaka is a Chinese Restaurant in Melaka (also known as Malacca) opposite the T-Hotel Melaka on the Jalan Melaka Raya 1, not to be confused with the very popular Hoe Kee Chicken Rice restaurant on Jonkers Street.
About the Restoran Hoi Kee
Restoran Hoi Kee is a popular Chinese restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating located 1.2 km walking distance from Dutch Square in Melaka.
Restoran Hoi Kee, also erroneously referred to Restoran Hoe Kee, gets bad reviews from tourists because it is more expensive than standard restaurants in Melaka, a complaint which made worse by the restaurant’s decision not to put any on the menu, or any of the signs. The service can also at times seem rude. Despite both complaints, which have some foundation in truth, the food at Restoran Hoi Kee is good and prices whilst comparatively expensive are reasonable enough for the restaurant to get steady stream of local customers and visitors from Singapore and China.
Food at the Restoran Hoi Kee
Restoran Hoi Kee serves a wide range of Chinese food. It describes itself as a ‘Mandarin’ Chinese restaurant, but some of the dishes, and the way they are cooked, are very similar to Amercian style Chinese food.
When I went to Restoran Hoi Kee I ordered one of the Chinese American style dishes: sweet and sour pork. I got a big plate of lightly battered pork strips in a thick sweet sauce with sweet peppers and pineapple chunks. This was exactly the American style Chinese food that I wanted. The price I was charged for the dish including rice was 39 MYR which I wasn’t upset about, although it did represent less good value for money than the very good large plate of nasi kandar I eat at a different restraurant 100 metres away for lunch which cost me 9 MYR. The large bottle of Tiger beer I had to accommpany the meal cost me 30 MYR, which again is more than you would expect to normally pay in a restaurant in Melaka.
What Restoran Hoi Kee specilaises in, however, is seafood and this is what the majority of the other customers who came to the restaurant on the same night ordered. The seafood dishes included crab stir-fried in black bean sauce and a wide range of other classic Chinese seafood dishes.
Restoran Hoi Kee is a place for fans of Chinese food to come to. The menu is long and includes some more exotic ingredients like frogs and fish heads. The people who come to this restaurant tend to come in groups and order a number of dishes to share. I saw no one complaining or arguing about the prices, although I would recommend that Restroan Hoi Kee started to be more upfront about what the food costs by stating it on the menu as what is a good restaurant fails to achieve its commercial potential because of the negative reviews it gets from people who feel that they have been overcharged.
