Penang Sentral Bus Station

Penang Sentral Bus Station is a new bus station which opened in November 2018 replacing Butterworth Bus Station.

Penang Sentral Bus Station is the main bus station for Penang State, and is located near to Butterworth Railway Station and connected to Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal, which is the mainland ferry port for RapidFerry services to George Town on Penang Island.

About Penang Sentral Bus Station

Penang Sentral Bus Station is open, but not complete. The Malaysian Government has a grand plan for Penang Sentral Bus Station to incorporate bus services, railway services, retail space, offices, accommodation and a connection to ferry services to Penang Island. The project started in 2007 and only the first of total of eight phases of planned construction has been completed so far.

At the time of writing Penang Sentral Bus Station is a three level building, with bus services operating from the 1st Level and a connection to ferry services to Penang via a bridge on the 2nd Level. It is short walk to the railway station via a path outside, and the apartment blocks and office buildings are yet to be built. Nonetheless, in terms of comfort and facilities Penang Sentral Station is much better than Butterworth Bus Station ever was.

Facilities at Penang Sentral Bus Station

Penang Sentral Bus Station has a wide range of facilities. There are toilets on all three levels, but the shops and restaurants are all on the 2nd and 3rd Level which are accessible via a series of escalators.

Facilities at Penang Sentral Bus Station include:

• KFC restaurant.
• Food Court.
• Baggage lockers on the 2nd Level.
• Muslim prayer rooms on the 3rd Level.
• ATM machines.
• Convenience stores.

To board the RapidFerry to George Town on Penang Island you need to go to the 2nd Level of Penang Sentral Bus Station and follow the signs to the link bridge. The bridge goes straight to the entrance to the ferry. You pay the fare for your journey on arrival in George Town.

Buying Tickets at the Bus Station

Penang Sentral Bus Station has a large ticket hall on the 2nd Level. The ticket counters sell tickets for all the different companies operating out of Penang Sentral Bus Station.

If you have pre-ordered your tickets online then you need to go to Counters 9 and 10 on the far right of the ticket hall to exchange your electronic booking voucher for a boarding pass before you commence your journey.
