OYO 998 Queen City Hotel, Penang

The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel is one of the better budget hotels in George Town on Penang Island in Malaysia.

Good points about the OYO 998 Queen City Hotel

The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel is very cheap. When we stayed in January 2020 we booked online and it cost 65 MYR a night, which is roughly $15 USD or 485 THB, making it one of the cheapest hotels you can find in any large South East Asian city which is popular with tourists. The rooms, particularly considering the price, are good and the location is fantastic.

The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel is located on Queen Street in George Town opposite the Sri Mahamariamman Temple. Queen Street is one of the main streets in the Little India district of the city and somewhere with lots of India restaurants and street food stalls selling Indian snacks like samosas and onion bhaji. From the hotel its only a 900 metre walk to the pier for the car ferry to and from Butterworth on the mainland where the train station and main bus station are both located. The hotel is also only a 450 metre walk away from the Khoo Kongsi, which is one of the city’s major tourist attractions.

The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel offers decent rooms, at a cheap price, and in a good location. There is little more that a budget traveller could want from a city centre hotel, except that is for a window.

Rooms at the The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel

The rooms at the The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel have no windows. Other than that they are great. We got a twin room because that was all they had available. The rooms are big enough to easily accommodate the two beds. although a double bed would have been better.

The beds in the The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel where we stayed were comfortable. The air-conditioned worked well and we didn’t hear any noise, although this may have been because the hotel didn’t seem to be very full.

Bathroom at the OYO 998 Queen City Hotel

Like most most budget city centre hotels, the bathrooms at the The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel are tiny. The shower area is squeezed in the small space between the toilet and the sink. Not great, but you need to pay double the price to get a proper sized bathroom in George Town. The shower, toilet and sink all worked so we had complaints about the bathroom.

Facilities at the The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel

The OYO 998 Queen City Hotel doesn’t have any shared facilities. There is a small reception area by the entrance and then a long corridor leading to the stairs and the lift. The hotel is located in a busy street with nearby shops, restaurants, travel agents and bars, particularly on Chulia Street which is at the western end of Queen Street, 50 metres walk away the entrance to the OYO 998 Queen City Hotel.
