The Motel Sei Mutiara is a budget hotel located in Kuah on the island of Langkawi. The air-conditioned rooms cost around 65 MYR a night (booked online) plus 10 MYR tourism tax unless you are permanent resident of Malaysia, in which case the tax is waived.
Good points about the Motel Sei Mutiara
The Motel Sei Mutiara is 1.9 km walking distance from Kuah Jetty making it one of the closest places to stay near the ferry terminal, and the only reason you would want to stay here is because you are leaving on an early ferry or arriving into Langkawi on a late ferry. There is very little of interest to see or do in Kuah although there are some good restaurants in the town centre and the large Legenda Park is fairly nearby the Motel Sei Mutiara.
The service is friendly at the Motel Sei Mutiara. The owners live on site and try their best to be helpful to guests.
The other thing I liked about the Motel Sei Mutiara is that it is tucked away on a back street away from a noisy main road. It’s a peaceful place to stay with an entertaining troop of wild monkeys living in the trees on the opposite side of the road to the entrance to the hotel.
Rooms at the Motel Sei Mutiara
The rooms at the Motel Sei Mutiara are basic and slightly dated. I have read complaints from other people who stayed there that there the rooms are dirty and infested with insects, however, I didn’t find that to be the case. The room where I stayed was clean and I didn’t notice any insects. The beds were comfortable enough and the air-conditioning strong enough to keep the rooms cool.
The bathrooms at the Motel Sei Mutiara were adequate. The shower gives just about enough hot water for a good shower.
The in-room facilities at the Motel Sei Mutiara are a let down. There is no cable TV, just a couple of local Malay language channels. There was a kettle and free water provided and this worked, although the room does not have a power socket which the cable on the kettle will reach so you need to improvise to make this work.
The free WiFi at the Motel Sei Mutiara is also a let down. The router is located downstairs by the reception so that means that if you are staying in one of the rooms upstairs you cannot any WiFI signal in the room. The way round this problem is to sit downstairs or on the stairs leading to the rooms on the upper. The Motel Sei Mutiara could easily solve this problem by installing a WiFi booster.
Facilities at the Motel Sei Mutiara
The Motel Sei Mutiara has a small shop selling drinks and snacks and outdoor seating areas by the reception near the entrance. The hotel does not do any catering, but it can arrange car hire and travel tickets.
The nearest convenience stores to the Motel Sei Mutiara are an 800 metre walk away towards Kuah Town on Jalan Penarak, where there is also a small food court. For better food you need to either go to Kuah Town, a 2 km walk, or the shopping mall by Kuah Jetty which has lots of shops and restaurants, including a Indian run restaurant serving good quality Nasi Kandar.
