About Travel to Kuala Besut
Kuala Besut is a small town with around 15,000 residents that few tourists visit except on the way to or from the Perhentian Islands.
Staying Overnight in Kuala Besut
Kuala Besut has quite a few hotels for a small town, over 40, including the Fairfield which is operated under the Marriot brand and stands out as the best and most expensive hotel in the area. At the other end of the scale, the Kuala Besut Jetty Budget Hotel Ain offers much cheaper and less luxurious private rooms. Booking accommodation in advance if you plan to stay is a good idea as the hotels and resorts are too spread out to easily walk from place to place searching for a room.
Kuala Besut also has quite a few restaurants, mostly serving local cuisine and closing quite early in the evening.
What Kuala Besut doesn’t have is many places where alcohol is available to purchase. Local attitudes towards alcohol are generally very conservative and alcohol is not widely sold. The notable exception to this is the 88 Lucky Seafood Restaurant, located on Jalan Besar only 150 metres walk to the north of Kuala Besut Jetty. 88 Lucky Seafood Restaurant is open everyday from 07:00 to 22:00.

Onward Travel from Kuala Besut
Many travellers will want to avoid spending a night in Kuala Besut as there are more enjoyable places to spend an evening elsewhere in Malaysia. In order to do this, and avoid spending the night on a bus, you need to try to get as early a boat to the mainland as you can. It’s quite a long way to travel by road to popular destinations in Malaysia.
- Kuala Lumpur: By bus the journey from Kuala Besut to Kuala Lumpur is scheduled to take 7 to 10 hours depending on the service you take, so an early departure from Kuala Besut is required to complete the journey with enough time left to check in into a Kuala Lumpur hotel and go out for an evening meal.
- Ipoh; By bus the journey from Kuala Besut to Ipoh is scheduled to take around 6 hours. Ipoh Old Town (close to the railway station) has lots of good hotels and restaurants, many of which serve alcohol.
- Penang: By bus the journey from Kuala Besut to Penang Sentral Bus Station is scheduled to take from 7 to 8 hours. Bear in mind, however, in addition to the time travelling by bus you also need to then take a ferry (or an expensive taxi ride) in order to reach the very popular destination of George Town on Penang Island.
- Kota Bharu: By local bus it takes around 90 minutes to travel from Kuala Besut to Kota Bharu. Kota Bharu is a large city fairly close to the border with Thailand. Quite a few foreign and domestic tourists pass through Kota Bharu and the city has good facilities for travellers as a consequence. Kota Bharu, like Kuala Besut, is in a morally conservative part of the country and few places sell alcohol. The only real bar in Kota Bharu is the Golden City on Jalan Pendek, close to the local bus station where bus services from Kuala Besut terminate.
