The most iconic feature of Eagle Square is the 12 metre high statue of a sea eagle on a star shaped concrete base facing out to the sea.

About Eagle Square

Eagle Square is located right beside Kuah Jetty which is the island’s main ferry pier which handles large ferries travelling between Langkawi and Kuala Perlis on the mainland, as well as to and from Penang, and Satun and Koh Lipe in Thailand. The first thing most visitors to Langkawi see as they arrive on the island is the large eagle statue. The sea eagle is the symbol of Langkawi partly because there are lots of these majestic birds on the island and partly because of popularly held belief that the name Langkwai is derived from Malay words for brown eagle.

The major attraction of Eagle Square is it seafront location. The platform with the eagle statue juts out over the ocean giving visitors panoramic views of Kuah Bay and the surrounding coastline. Eagle Square gets a lot of visitors who come to take pictures, many of whom are waiting for a ferry or have just arrived by ferry as Eagle Square is easy walking distance from the passenger terminal and shopping centre at Kuah Jetty.

Behind the famous statue Eagle Square there is an indoor market with toilets. Small statues of the eagle and other souvenirs, as well as cold drinks, are sold in this indoor market. Around the edges of the square are some landscaped gardens with some lakes and waterways with wooden bridges. The small lake between the square and the passenger terminal is home to water monitor lizards and large otters which you are most likely to see if you come at around 07:00 before the area gets too busy.
