Butterworth Bus Station

2021 Update:

This bus station has now closed. Click on the link to read about the new Penang Sentral Bus Station which is a 500 metre walk away from the old Butterworth Bus Station.

Butterworth’s old and slightly chaotic Bus Terminal has been closed and a new large and modern Bus Terminal near to the Ferry Terminal for Penang is currently under construction. As a temporary measure whilst the new bus station is being built a temporary bus station is currently in use.

The temporary bus station is conveniently located near to Butterworth Train Station. The construction of the new bus terminal has also meant the temporary closure of the walkway leading from Butterworth Train Station to Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal, from where the car ferry to George Town departs. To reach the ferry terminal there is a ferry shuttle bus service from the temporary bus station which takes less than 5 minutes to reach the ferry terminal.

Butterworth Bus Station

A full range of services depart from Butterworth’s temporary bus station, however, the station itself is very basic. There is a covered area by the bus platforms and some small shops and food stalls but nothing else. There is no air-conditioned waiting area and shopping mall which you will find in other major Malaysian bus terminals such as Aman Jaya Bus Terminal in Ipoh or the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur.

Despite the lack of amenities, and slightly chaotic organisation of bus departure times, Butterworth’s temporary bus station serves it purpose – it just not somewhere you would want to spend time a long time waiting for your bus.

Travel to Butterworth Bus Station

Butterworth’s temporary bus station is really easy to reach. If you are arriving in Butterworth by train then you simply need to turn left out of the main entrance to Butterworth Train Station and follow the footpath which leads into the bus terminal. If you are travelling from Penang Island, the easiest option is to make your way to the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Port which is located on the seafront road (Pengkalan Weld) in George Town. Ferry services from George Town to Butterworth operate from 05:40 until 00:40 every day and the one way fare is 1.20 MYR. The journey takes about 15 minutes and ferries depart every 15 to 20 minutes until 22:00 when the departures become less frequent.

Location of Butterworth Bus Station

Bus services currently depart from a temporary location opposite the front entrance to the train station. The Butterworth Bus Terminal currently marked on Google Maps is the new bus station which is still under construction.

Facilities at Butterworth Bus Station

There are nearly no facilities at Butterworth’s temporary bus station:

  • Toilets at the far end of the station near the shops.
  • There is a small row of shops at the far end of the platform.
  • Seating under a metal roof by the bus platforms.
