About Travel to George Town
Public bus services from Ipoh do not travel direct to Penang Island, but rather terminate at bus stations on the mainland. If your final destination is Penang Island then the most convenient bus station to use is Penang Sentral Bus Station. The reason that this is the most convenient bus station to use is because there is an access passage linking Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal, from where frequent ferry services depart to George Town on Penang Island, to the second floor of the bus station.

Ferry services from Butterworth to George Town operate every day of the year from 05:20 to 00:10, with departures every 20 minutes. The adult fare from Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal to George Town is 1.2 MYR and the child fare is 0.60 MYR. Tickets are available to purchase at the ticket counters located inside the ferry terminal, which you pass on your way to board the ferry. The journey by ferry from Butterworth to George Town takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on weather. There are toilets and two small shops on the ferry.

Ferry services from Butterworth terminate at Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal, which is located on the seafront road in George Town (Pangkalan Weld). From here its a walk of around 1 km to many of the most popular areas in the old part of George Town. If you plan to travel further, or you have heavy bags or young children to carry, then you can get a bus from Penang Jetty Bus Terminal which is located in front of Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal. There are services from Penang Jetty Bus Terminal to most parts of Penang Island, however, the most popular service departing from Penang Jetty Bus Terminal is the free bus service (the CAT bus) which departs from Bus Terminal B and follows a circular route around George Town with stops at popular locations such as Chulia Street. The other very popular bus service for visitors to the island is Bus 101 to Tanjung Bungah Beach, which also departs from Bus Terminal B.
